Hurricanes aim to break out of slumop against Capitals

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Carolina Hurricanes are in danger of not getting a chance to defend their Stanley Cup championship.

The slumping Hurricanes continue a three-game road trip on Friday when they meet the Washington Capitals.

After winning their first Stanley Cup last season, the Hurricanes are in danger of missing the postseason. They have 73 points, tied with te New York Rangers and Toronto for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Carolina, which is 1-3-0 in its last four games, started its road trip with a 3-1 loss against Atlanta on Sunday.

Captain Rod Brind'Amour scored a goal, his first point in his last four contests. Brind'Amour, who has 21 goals this season, has three goals and four assists against the Capitals this season.

Washington's losing streak reached five games in a 3-0 loss at Toronto on Tuesday. Left wing Alex Ovechkin was scoreless in his second straight game.

Ovechkin, who is eighth in NHL scoring with 80 points, has five goals and an assist in six games against the Hurricanes this season.

The teams have split six meetings this season.
