Red Wings aim to pull closer to NHL's top spot

DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Boston Bruins are fighting for their playoff lives. The Detroit Red Wings are fighting for first place overall.

The Red Wings shoot for their fifth victory in six games Sunday when they host the Bruins.

Detroit has 95 points and trails first-place Nashville (46-18-6) by three points for the top spot in the NHL. The Red Wings also trail the Predators by three points in the Central Division race.

Detroit improved to 3-0-1 on its five-game homestand after a 3-2 overtime win over Los Angeles on Friday. Mikael Samuelsson returned after missing six weeks with a broken bone in his foot and scored the game-winner in the extra session.

Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and assisted on the winner while Dominik Hasek returned after missing three games with a groin injury to post 24 saves.

The Bruins have 69 points and fell to 13th place in the Eastern Conference after a 4-1 road loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

Defenseman Dennis Wideman scored the lone goal for the Bruins, who have lost three straight games and six of their last eight.
