Stars C Modano aims for 500th career goal

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Mike Modano's quest for a career milestone will be a pleasant diversion for the Dallas Stars.

In a season plagued by a hip injury, Modano can become the 39th member of the 500-goal club when the Stars go for their third consecutive victory Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Modano's injury sidelined him for 23 games and he needed another 10 to show signs of returning to form. He has three goals in his last five contests.

A six-time All-Star, Modano netted his 499th goal in dramatic fashion. It came just 35 seconds into overtime as Dallas posted a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday. The tally left him three away from Joe Mullen's mark for American-born players.

The two-game winning streak comes following a four-game slide and leaves the Stars in a three-way tie with the Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks for fifth place in the Western Conference.

Although they have split their six games in March, the Flyers are the only team in the league with fewer than 20 wins and 50 points.

Philadelphia was shut out for the fourth time this season in Monday's 4-0 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Flyers will be facing Dallas for the first time since March 11, 2004.
