Avalanche return home after successful road trip

Mar 14, 2007 - 12:53 PM Calgary (37-22-10) at Colorado (34-29-6) 9:00 pm EDT

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Avalanche have not abandoned their slim playoff hopes.

Colorado hopes to get closer to the final postseason spot in the Western Conference when it hosts the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.

The Avalanche trail Calgary by 10 points for the last playoff spot in the West. They have stayed in contention because of a 4-0-1 road trip which ended in a 3-2 overtime loss to Minnesota on Sunday.

Milan Hejduk and Ian Laperriere scored while Peter Budaj made 26 saves. Budaj is 5-0-1 with a 1.80 goals-against average in his last six starts for Colorado, which is 16-15-3 on the road this season.

Paul Stastny assisted on Hejduk's goal to extend his points streak to 18 games, setting an NHL record for the longest points streak by a rookie.

The Flames are third in the tight Northwest Division, three points behind Minnesota and four points back of Vancouver. They improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine contests after a 5-4 home shootout victory over St. Louis on Monday.

Alex Tanguay and Jarome Iginla scored in the shootout while Kristian Huselius had a goal and three assists for the Flames. Huselius has five goals and 10 points in five games against the Avalanche this season.
