Brewer scores in OT; Oilers drop 10th straight

Mar 18, 2007 - 4:18 AM EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- Defenseman Eric Brewer needed a few extra moments to break the hearts of the Edmonton Oilers.

Brewer netted the game-winner in overtime and Petr Cajanek and defenseman Jeff Woywitka scored to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 triumph over the Oilers, who lost their 10th consecutive game.

After dropping the first two contests of their three-game road swing - both past regulation - the Blues won their 30th game of the season with their second victory in seven outings.

"When you deserve to win, you usually win," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "I didn't think we deserved to in Vancouver (on Thursday) and as a result, we didn't get it. Tonight, because of the Oilers being handicapped because of their defense situation, I think we were the deserving winner here tonight."

Despite picking up its first point after nine straight regulation defeats, Edmonton failed to end the slide and moved within one loss of tying the franchise mark for consecutive defeats set from October 16-November 7, 1993.

"It's a bad situation but it can get a lot worse if the atmosphere is such that guys hate coming to the place where they have to put the work in," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "We didn't play well tonight. It was pretty shoddy at times but in the third, I thought we competed a little better."

"It's obviously very disappointing," Edmonton captain Jason Smith said. "We were probably lucky to be in a situation where we got into the overtime because we didn't play as well as we needed to. (Goaltender Dwayne Roloson) made unreal saves for us all night but we have to play better."

Brewer ended the contest at 2:04 of the extra session with a spinning backhander in the slot between Roloson's pads. It was his fifth goal of the season.

Shawn Horcoff netted Edmonton's first power-play goal in 31 attempts during the losing streak midway through the third period by firing a rebound of Petr Sykora's shot past netminder Curtis Sanford to forge a 2-2 tie.

St. Louis took a 2-1 lead with 6:53 in the second session when Woywitka scored his first career goal by knocking Radek Dvorak's centering pass inside the left goalpost.

"I was getting interviewed after the second period and I was saying that there (is) no better place for me to get it," Woywitka said. "In front of family and friends and people who have been watching you all along the way. I'm excited we got the two points and ended off a pretty good road trip."

Cajanek scored his 13th goal in the first period and Sanford made 22 saves for St. Louis, which is 23-12-8 under Murray.

"(Murray has) come in and expected a lot of the older players and he put a lot of onus on our shoulders," St. Louis center Doug Weight said. "But at the same time, depth is the key to our team and he (has) instilled the confidence."

"We lost the first three games I was there with the Blues," Murray said. "We had to find our way a little bit and the key for us was our veteran leadership. Weight has played extremely well and when your leading players buy in to what you're trying to do, then the younger players follow and they've played extremely well."

Kyle Brodziak netted his first career tally and Roloson stopped 37 shots for Edmonton, which has been outscored, 37-9, during the skid.

"I thought we played all right in the third," MacTavish said. "First two periods we were ... not good. It would have been nice to stop the mourning here for a little while with a win, but again, it was a disappointing finish."
