Rangers shoot for seventh place in East vs. Penguins
Mar 19, 2007 - 2:23 PM Pittsburgh (41-21-10) at NY Rangers (35-28-9) 7:00 pm ESTNEW YORK (Ticker) -- While pleased with a seven-goal outburst on Saturday, New York Rangers coach Tom Renney hopes his team has a few tallies left in the tank.
Henrik Lundqvist seeks some redemption Monday when the Rangers host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Coming off Saturday's 7-0 rout of the Boston Bruins - New York's most lopsided victory in nearly nine years - the Rangers trail the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes (36-29-8) by one point for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Matt Cullen scored twice, Jaromir Jagr and Sean Avery had three assists apiece and Lundqvist stopped 30 shots for the Rangers, who are 6-1-3 in their last 10 contests.
However, Lundqvist was in goal in the past two matchups against Penguins, when New York squandered a pair of two-goal leads en route to losses.
The Rangers had a 2-0 lead before Crosby scored the shootout clincher in a 4-3 victory on March 1. Nine days later, Crosby and rookie Evgeni Malkin had power-play goals and Colby Armstrong scored in a shootout for Pittsburgh's 3-2 triumph.
The league leader in assists (76) and points (108), Crosby has three goals in regulation and one in a shootout against the Rangers to help Pittsburgh win four of the first six meetings this season.
Pittsburgh has won five in a row and and is 8-1-1 in its last 10. The Penguins are in a fourth-place tie with the Ottawa Senators (42-23-8) in the East and trail the New Jersey Devils (43-21-8) by two in the Atlantic Division race.
Crosby registered a goal and an assist and Jarkko Ruutu netted the shootout clincher as Pittsburgh kept its winning streak intact with Sunday's 4-3 triumph over the Senators.
