Panthers continue playoff push vs. Senators

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- The Florida Panthers have become an unlikely participant in the race for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.

The Panthers look to pull closer to the final playoff spot when they host the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

Florida has 75 points and is 12th in the East, just five points out of the final playoff berth. The Panthers picked up their eighth win in their last 11 games with Tuesday's 4-1 triumph over Philadelphia.

The Panthers have not made the playoffs since 2000, when they were swept by New Jersey in the quarterfinals.

Olli Jokinen scored for the second straight game and Ed Belfour made 24 saves for the Panthers.

The Senators have 94 points and trail first-place Buffalo (47-19-7) by seven points in the Northeast Division. Ottawa leads fifth-place Pittsburgh (41-22-10) by just two points in the East.

Ottawa defeated St. Louis, 4-2, on Tuesday for its fourth win in five contests. Chris Kelly scored twice while Martin Gerber made 29 saves. Gerber is 9-0-2 and has allowed just 23 goals in his last 11 starts.
