Rangers face Canadiens in key Eastern Conference matchup

Mar 27, 2007 - 2:01 PM NY Rangers (39-28-9) at Montreal (39-31-6) 7:30 pm EDT

MONTREAL (Ticker) -- The surging New York Rangers seek their season-high sixth straight Tuesday when they face the Montreal Canadiens in a critical Eastern Conference matchup.

Sparked by their winning streak, the Rangers have moved into sixth place in the conference standings with 87 points. However, they still are just one point ahead of Tampa Bay and three in front of Montreal, Carolina and the New York Islanders, all tied for the final playoff spot.

The Rangers have been carried by the play of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who posted a 4-0-0 record with an 0.72 goals-against average last week en route to being named the NHL's First Star of the Week.

Montreal also is playing well, having won a season-high six straight home games and four in a row overall.

Alexei Kovalev scored twice as the Canadiens emerged with a 4-1 victory over Washington on Saturday.

The Rangers have taken the first two meeting this season, with Lundqvist notching a 1.50 GAA in the two contests. Montreal has not lost three straight to New York since the 2001-02 season.
