Hurricanes meet Maple Leafs in crucial Eastern Conference battle

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Locked in a tight battle for the Eastern Conference's final playoff berth, the Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs meet Tuesday.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes have 84 points, putting them in a three-way tie for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with the New York Islanders (36-27-12) and Montreal (39-31-6). The Leafs are just two points back of the eighth spot.

Carolina has won three straight and four of its last five games.

Andrew Ladd scored twice and Scott Walker notched a career-high three assists as Carolina posted a 6-4 victory over San Jose on Saturday.

Toronto, which has picked up at least one point in five of its last seven games, enters with a season-high six-game home winning streak. But the Leafs still are just 17-15-5 at the Air Canada Centre.

On Saturday, Darcy Tucker scored twice and Nik Antropov tallied a goal and an assist to lift Toronto to a 4-1 victory over Buffalo.
