Weight, Jackman lead Blues past Oilers

Mar 30, 2007 - 5:05 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Doug Weight had a goal and an assist and Barret Jackman set up three tallies as the St. Louis Blues skated to a 5-2 victory over the reeling Edmonton Oilers.

In a battle of Western Conference teams playing for nothing more than pride, the Blues got off to a fast start and dominated play after a brief lull to send the Oilers to their 15th loss in 16 games.

A former Oiler, Weight opened the scoring just 3:44 into the game with his 14th goal of the season off a pass from Jackman.

"I yelled to Barret to give me the puck tonight, and he did," Weight said. "He is playing with a lot of confidence right now. He has a lot of talent. He is a good passer and is someone to be reckoned with."

Peter Sejna extended the lead to 2-0 six minutes later before Edmonton awoke from its slumber.

Ales Hemsky and rookie defenseman Mathieu Roy tallied 49 seconds apart late in the opening session to forge a tie. But St. Louis proceeded to tighten up defensively and scored the final three goals of the contest to move within a game of .500 (32-33-12).

"I thought we were pretty solid for about 58 minutes," St. Louis coach Andy Murray said. "There were two minutes that I did not like very much."

Edmonton registered 10 shots on goal in the first period but managed only eight over the final two sessions. The Oilers had only three in the second period as the Blues took control.

"A game like that is an indication of where we are at right now, an inability to withstand the pressure that they had," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "Everyone had a hand in it, and it was pretty disappointing. We started the game poorly and gave up a couple of bad-angle goals."

Lee Stempniak and Jay McClement scored in a span of less than six minutes in the session and Petr Cajanek added an empty-netter with 30 seconds remaining in the third to seal the Blues' second victory in six games.

"We want to finish off the rest of our games on a high," Jackman said. "With the start we had to this season, we wanted to go out and get as many points as we could. We want to finish off strong. If we come to compete, we can finish at the .500 mark or better."

Jason Bacashihua made 16 saves for St. Louis, which won three of the four matchups between the teams this season and improved to 11-1-0 with three ties in its last 15 home meetings with Edmonton.

Jussi Markkanen made 37 saves for the Oilers, who were outshot, 27-8, over the final two periods.

"Obviously, when you let four goals against and you have to play catch up all day long, it is tough," Markkanen said. "They definitely deserved to win. They were really active. They skated better than we did."
