Red Wings seek another Presidents' Trophy
Apr 1, 2007 - 2:29 PM Detroit (47-19-12) at Columbus (32-39-7) 12:30 pm EDTCOLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings again have their sights set on the Presidents' Trophy.
The Red Wings, who are one point behind Buffalo in the race for the Presidents' Trophy, begin the final week of the regular season against favorable competition when they face the Blue Jackets on Sunday.
Along with Sunday's contest at Columbus, Detroit will close out the campaign with a home-and-home series against Chicago (28-40-9).
The Red Wings are a remarkable 23-2-3 against Columbus and Chicago in the past two seasons. If it can continue that dominance, Detroit can secure the best record in the NHL.
The Red Wings and Anaheim (47-20-12) have 106 points, one more than Nashville in the Western Conference. But Detroit is behind high-powered Buffalo (50-21-7) for the league's best mark.
The Red Wings are looking for their third consecutive Presidents' Trophy and sixth straight division title. Detroit is bidding to become the first club to finish atop the NHL's standings three straight seasons since the 1976-78 Montreal Canadiens.
However, Detroit did not take a step towards that honor in its last contest, giving up a three-goal third-period lead in a 4-3 shootout loss to Dallas on Friday. Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek allowed the only goal of the bonus format to the Stars' Sergei Zubov.
Detroit has lost three of its last five games - all in a shootout.
After a rare four-game winning streak, Columbus dropped its second straight contest with a 3-1 loss to Chicago on Friday.
