Hurricanes look to end three-game slide vs. Panthers

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- The Carolina Hurricanes seek to snap a three-game losing streak when they visit the Florida Panthers on Sunday.

With four games left, the defending champion Hurricanes are four points behind the Montreal Canadiens (41-31-6) in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Goaltender Cam Ward surrendered two third-period goals in the Hurricanes' 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday.

The Hurricanes are trying to avoid becoming the first Stanley Cup champion since the 1995 New Jersey Devils to fail to qualify for the playoffs the following season.

"We've got to be (optimistic)," Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. "We've got to win a hockey game on Sunday. That's the bottom line. Start with one, then we move on."

Florida extended its winning streak to three games with Friday's 3-2 overtime victory over the Washington Capitals.

Ed Belfour made 30 saves and Martin Gelinas scored two goals, including the game-winning tally for the Panthers.
