Sabres can clinch top seed in Eastern Conference

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Sabres can clinch the top seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs with a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

Buffalo is five points ahead of New Jersey (47-24-8) and Ottawa (47-24-8) in the conference. The Sabres trail Detroit (48-19-12) by one point in the race for the Presidents' Trophy, awarded to the team that finishes the regular season with the most points.

Buffalo has four games left, one more than Detroit.

Thomas Vanek (39 goals) and Daniel Briere (61 assists) lead the attack for the Sabres. The two scored a goal apiece in a 4-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

The Penguins, who have already clinched their first playoff berth in six years, enter this game one point behind the Devils for the Atlantic Division lead. Sidney Crosby leads the NHL with 117 points, nine of which have been recorded in the last four games.

Pittsburgh has won the last two matchups with Buffalo after losing the season series opener on November 17. Crosby had a goal and two assists in the last meeting on March 13, scoring the deciding goal in a shootout victory.
