Canadiens, Rangers take playoff battle down to wire

NEW YORK (Ticker) =- The New York Rangers can clinch a playoff berth with a win. The Montreal Canadiens can't afford a loss.

Needing just one point to clinch a playoff berth, the Rangers host the Canadiens on Thursday.

New York has won seven of its last nine games, tying Tampa Bay (44-32-4) for sixth in the Eastern Conference. But the Rangers are just two points in front of eighth-place Montreal and three in front of ninth-place Toronto.

The Canadiens are just one point in front of the Leafs for the the final playoff spot with two games left. They visit Toronto on Saturday night.

Montreal has won eight straight games at home, but has struggled recently on the road, posting a 1-7-0 record in its last eight contests away from home.

The Rangers have taken two of three games from the Canadiens this season.
