Thrashers seek to hold off Lightning in Southeast Division

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Thrashers will try to hold off the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Southeast Division with two games left.

The Thrashers (41-28-11) lead the Lightning (44-32-4) by one point. The winner gets the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race and the loser may fall to seventh.

Atlanta will visit the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes on Friday before closing the season at home against Tampa Bay on Saturday. The Lightning host Florida on Friday.

A Lightning loss in regulation on Friday combined with an Atlanta victory would give the Thrashers the division title.

The Thrashers are coming off a frustrating 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 40th goal of the season and the 200th of his career in the loss.

The Hurricanes were eliminated from playoff contention after a 3-2 loss in Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The Hurricanes are the first team since the 1996 New Jersey Devils to miss the playoffs the season after hoisting the Stanley Cup.

The Thrashers have won three of the last four meetings with the Hurricanes.
