Islanders try to keep playoff hopes alive

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The New York Islanders continue their drive for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon.

The Islanders trail the eighth-place Montreal Canadiens (42-33-6) by two points and and are one point behind the Toronto Maple Leafs (39-31-11).

Though trailing in the standings, the Islanders do have one advantage over Montreal and Toronto; they have two games remaining on the schedule.

The Maple Leafs host the Canadiens on Saturday in the season finale for both teams. The Canadiens would clinch the eighth seed with a win regardless of what the Islanders do in their final two games. A win by Maple Leafs, however, could open the door for Islanders.

New York won a critical game Thursday, topping the Maple Leafs, 5-2. Jason Blake broke a 2-2 tie in the third period with his 40th goal of the season. Arron Asham and Miroslav Satan added tallies to secure the win.

Backup goaltender Wade Dubielewicz finished with 28 saves for the Islanders, including 11 in the third.

The Flyers, who lost to the New Jersey Devils, 3-2, on Thursday, will finish the season with the worst record in the NHL.

The Islanders are 5-2-0 against the Flyers this season.
