Vanek, Sabres continue march towards Presidents' Trophy

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Thomas Vanek and the Buffalo Sabres are getting healthy at the right time. But before they begin their postseason quest, they will try to claim a mighty prize.

The Sabres shoot for their third straight win Saturday when they visit the Washington Capitals.

Buffalo, which already has home-ice advantage in the Eastern Conference, can clinch at least a share of the Presidents' Trophy with a win Saturday.

The Sabres are tied with Detroit (49-19-13) for the league lead with 111 points. However, Buffalo has a game in hand on the Red Wings, who conclude their season Saturday.

Buffalo received good news Thursday, welcoming back last year's leading scorer Maxim Afinogenov in a 4-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Afinogenov, who currently is fifth on the team with 23 goals, missed 21 games with a broken left wrist.

Vanek collected two goals and an assist against Boston to help Buffalo set a new franchise record for wins.

While the Sabres are focused on the postseason, the Capitals are struggling, having lost six of their last eight.

Washington is coming off Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Atlanta Thrashers in which All-Star Alex Ovechkin scored two goals.
