Lightning hope to continue the trend for No. 7 seeds

TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- If recent history is any indication, the seventh-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning have a good chance of knocking the New Jersey Devils out of the playoffs.

In the previous nine playoff seasons, a No. 7 seed has defeated a No. 2 seed. It has happened six times in the Eastern Conference and five times in the Western Conference.

The Lightning took their first step toward keeping that streak alive with a 3-2 win at New Jersey on Saturday, evening the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at a game apiece.

Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier scored in a 2:31 span, bridging the second and third periods, while Johan Holmqvist bounced back from a shaky playoff debut with 34 saves. Brad Richards had a pair of assists, extending his playoff points streak to 10 games.

Zach Parise scored his third goal of the series for the Devils, who lost their home-ice advantage.

New Jersey split its two regular-season games in Tampa Bay during the regular season. The win was a 2-0 shutout for Martin Brodeur.
