Red Wings look to close out series
Apr 22, 2007 - 1:50 PM Detroit at Calgary 9:00 pm EDT Western Conference quarterfinal Detroit leads, 3-2CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) - Home-ice advantage has held true in the Western Conference quarterfinal matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and Calgary Flames.
Detroit owns a three-games-to-two lead in the series and can finish off the Flames on Sunday. However, the home team has won every game in this series and Game Six will take place at Calgary's Pengrowth Saddledome.
Should Calgary even the series with a win, the deciding Game Seven will be played Tuesday at Joe Louis Arena, a venue the Flames have not won at since December 1, 2005.
"They played great at home and we have to answer the bell again coming home for Game Six," Calgary center Craig Conroy said. "There are no easy ways, but we have to do it at home and then have an opportunity to come back. But, got to win one in this building at some point."
Calgary's string of bad luck in Detroit continued on Saturday as the Red Wings throttled the Flames 5-1. The Red Wings have outscored Calgary 12-3 in their three meetings at Detroit this series.
There also is some bad blood brewing between the teams following an incident at the end of Game Five.
With 3:17 remaining in the game, which was out of reach for Calgary, netminder Miikka Kiprusoff was replaced by Jamie McClennan. Just 18 seconds later, McClennan was called for slashing Detroit's Johan Franzen, who was camped in front of the net, to earn a five-minute major and game misconduct.
Shortly thereafter, Flames captain Jarome Iginla butt-ended Detroit's Mathieu Schneider, but the officials did not see the infraction and no call was made.
Iginla, the Flames leading scorer during the regular season, hasn't recorded a point in Detroit during the series.
"It's not about playing nasty," Iginla said. "We're just keeping our energy up into (Sunday), that's all. It's just about it's 5-1 at that point we don't like some of the whacks that were going on. Just trying to get something physical going at that time."
Henrik Zetterberg scored his first two goals of the postseason in the win.
