Sabres face Canadiens in home opener

Oct 6, 2006 - 1:41 PM Montreal (0-0-0) at Buffalo (1-0-0) 7:30 pm EDT

BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) - After a triumphant season opener, the Buffalo Sabres return home Friday to face the Montreal Canadiens, who begin their 2006-07 campaign.

On Wednesday, Buffalo posted a 3-2 shootout victory at Carolina on a goal by Daniel Briere.

Jason Pominville and Chris Drury also scored and Ryan Miller made 32 saves and turned aside all three shots faced in the shootout for the Sabres, who lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference finals last year.

Miller is 4-0-1 with a 1.78 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage in five career games against Montreal.

Montreal enters the season with a new coach in Guy Carbonneau, who played on two of the Canadiens' 23 Stanley Cup squads. Carbonneau was hired as coach after general manager Bob Gainey relinquished his coaching duties to concentrate on the GM job.

The Canadiens acquired left wing Sergei Samsonov and right wing Mike Johnson in the offseason to boost the offensive output. It seemingly worked in the preseason, as Montreal scored 34 goals in nine games.

Montreal went 2-5-1 against Buffalo last season.
