Senators, Sabres meet for first time since playoff upset
Oct 7, 2006 - 2:18 PM Buffalo (2-0-0) at Ottawa (1-1-0) 7:00 pm EDTOTTAWA (Ticker) -- The last time the Buffalo Sabres played in Ottawa, they eliminated the Senators in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Semifinals to complete a huge playoff upset.
Buffalo hopes to defeat Ottawa once again when the two Northeast Division rivals meet on Saturday night.
The Sabres continued a solid start to their campaign Friday, defeating the Montreal Canadiens, 5-4, in a shootout. Maxim Afinogenov and Thomas Vanek scored in the shootout for Buffalo, which got goals in regulation from Jiri Novotny, Jason Pominville, Daniel Briere and Afinogenov.
Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller upped his record to 2-0 after making 23 saves.
Ottawa tries to regroup from an embarrassing 6-0 home loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday in the second game of a home-and-home series. The Senators, who had defeated the Leafs in eight of their previous nine meetings, were outshot 40-34 and went scoreless on five power-play opportunities.
Ottawa goaltender Martin Gerber only stopped 19 of 24 shots and was replaced by Ray Emery after two periods. Emery stopped 15 of 16 shots.
