Shanahan, Jagr lead Rangers in first meeting with Flyers
Oct 7, 2006 - 2:28 PM NY Rangers (1-0-0) at Philadelphia (0-1-0) 7:00 pm EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Brendan Shanahan knows how to make an outstanding first impression in the "Big Apple".
Shanahan tries to lead the New York Rangers to their second victory in as many games Saturday when they meet the Philadelphia Flyers, who are playing their home opener.
Signed as a free agent in the offseason after nine campaigns and three Stanley Cup titles with the Detroit Red Wings, Shanahan scored twice and became the 15th player to reach 600 goals Thursday as the Rangers posted a 5-2 triumph over the Washington Capitals.
Moments after being named the 24th captain in franchise history and the first since Mark Messier's retirement, Jagr got the season off to a flying start by netting his 592nd career goal only 29 seconds into the contest.
Blair Betts and Martin Straka scored and Petr Prucha added two assists as the Rangers won a season opener at home for the first time since 1985.
Philadelphia fired 40 shots at the Pittsburgh Penguins, one of the league's least-successful teams last season, but failed to score in a 4-0 loss on Thursday. The Flyers went 0-for-10 on the power play.
The teams split their four meetings last season. Philadelphia, which is 15-8-3 in home openers, lost to New York in last year's season opener before winning four of its next five contests.
No one has shouted yet.
