Fleury looks to stay sharp as Penguins host Red Wings
Oct 7, 2006 - 3:28 PM Detroit (0-1-0) at Pittsburgh (1-0-0) 7:30 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Marc-Andre Fleury did not even win the Pittsburgh Penguins' starting goaltender job until the very end of the preseason.
Fleury shined in Pittsburgh's surprising 4-0 season-opening victory over Philadelphia, and looks for a repeat performance as the Penguins host the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.
Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist, but it was Fleury that was the Penguins' biggest star Thursday, steering aside all 40 shots faced in recording his second career shutout.
The victory was Pittsburgh's first season-opening win since 1999.
The Red Wings enter after a disappointing season-opening 3-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.
Henrik Zetterberg scored Detroit's only goal after the Canucks raced out to a 3-0 lead.
Goaltender Dominik Hasek, who was signed over the summer as a free agent, started his second stint with the Red Wings, stopping 14 of 17 shots.
The Red Wings, who outshot Vancouver, 28-17, struggled on the power play in going 0-for-9.
No one has shouted yet.
