Blackhawks look to keep momentum going
Oct 7, 2006 - 3:47 PM Columbus (0-0-1) at Chicago (1-0-0) 8:30 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) -- Are the Chicago Blackhawks truly an improved club?
The Blackhawks went a surprising 7-1-0 in the preseason and won their season opener. They now look to keep the victories coming when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets in their home opener on Saturday in a battle of Central Division clubs.
Chicago outlasted the Nashville Predators in a wild 8-6 season-opening victory on Thursday. Martin Havlat, who was signed in the offseason to help bolster the Blackhawks offensive production, scored twice and added two assists.
Nikolai Khabibulin got the win in goal but was shaky times in stopping 34 of 40 shots for Chicago, which rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 4-3.
The Blue Jackets will play the second of back-to-back games following a tough 3-2 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.
Columbus led 2-0 on goals from Mark Hartigan and David Vyborny but Vancouver was able to tie the game with two third-period tallies. Daniel Sedin sealed the loss for the Blue Jackets just 31 seconds into overtime.
The Blue Jackets, who were outshot, 44-20, by the Canucks, play seven of their first 11 games at home.
