Legace, Blues look to ruin Kings' home opener

Oct 7, 2006 - 3:59 PM St Louis (0-0-1) at Los Angeles (0-1-0) 10:30 pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Manny Legace looks to ruin the Los Angeles Kings' home opener Saturday when the St. Louis Blues head to the Staples Center.

Legace signed as a free agent with the Blues in August after spending the previous six seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Last season, he posted a 37-8-0 record with a 2.19 goals against average. His 37 wins placed him fifth in the NHL.

The 33-year-old goaltender suffered a tough 5-4 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, despite notching 29 saves. Dan Hinote, Jamal Mayers and Lee Stempniak each tallied goals in defeat for St. Louis, which has lost its last nine season openers.

The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Kings, 4-3, in Los Angeles' season opener Friday. Chris Kunitz scored midway through the third period and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 41 saves for the Ducks.

Dan Cloutier is the new starting goaltender for Los Angeles, after being acquired from the Vancouver Canucks on July 5 for a pair of draft picks. He finished with 28 saves in Friday's loss, surrendering three straight goals to the Ducks between the second and third periods.
