Final - OT
Red Wings look to capitalize on home ice
May 13, 2007 - 12:50 PM Anaheim at Detroit 7:30 pm EDT Western Conference final Detroit leads, 1-0DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings are not wasting their home-ice advantage.
The Red Wings are 6-1 at Joe Louis Arena this postseason and look to improve on that mark when they host the Anaheim Ducks in Game Two of the Western Conference final.
Detroit posted a 2-1 victory here in the opener of the best-of-seven series on Friday. The top-seeded Red Wings, who earned home-ice advantage throughout the Western Conference playoffs, have outscored their opponents, 21-7 in Detroit this postseason.
The Ducks are 3-2 on the road in these playoffs, but have shared similar success at home this postseason with a 5-1 mark.
Henrik Zetterberg netted a power-play goal in the first period and Tomas Holmstrom scored with the extra skater late in the third to snap a tie and lift the Red Wings to their victory in Game One.
Detroit was 2-for-4 on the power play against Anaheim - the top-ranked penalty-killing unit.
Norris Trophy candidate Nicklas Lidstrom recorded two assists and Dominik Hasek made 31 saves for Detroit, which is seeking its first Stanley Cup appearance since 2002.
"I think (Hasek) gives the whole team confidence when he can make some unbelievable saves that he made (in Game One) and in previous games where if we can be there to help him for rebounds, he can usually stop that first shot," Lidstrom said.
"We have to be there and clear the puck. But I think he gives the whole team confidence that he can win games by himself. He did that (in Game One), I thought. He came up big."
Hasek appears to be getting hot at the right time. The 42-year-old has won four straight games and during that span he's stopped 107 of 111 shots. He has not allowed more than two goals in each of the last nine games.
