Vokoun helps Caps edge Sens, remain unbeaten

Oct 16, 2011 - 2:16 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Tomas Vokoun made 33 saves, including 26 in the final two periods for the Capitals, as Washington hung on for a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.

Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson provided two first-period goals for the Capitals, who are 4-0 after their fourth consecutive one-goal win.

Peter Regin scored the lone goal for the Senators, who got 24 saves from Alex Auld.

The Capitals struck first with a power-play goal 8:47 into the opening period. Mike Knuble possessed the puck from behind the net and found Alexander Semin, who then backhanded a pass to Backstrom for a one-timed wrist shot from a sharp right angle.

Washington made it 2-0 three-plus minutes later when Johansson scored on a wrap-around attempt as the puck trickled through the legs of Auld.

Ottawa got on the board with just 26 seconds to go in the first period. Regin pounced on a loose puck off an initial shot from the right point by David Runbland. Regin controlled the disc in front of the right circle and finished with a wrister.

The Senators outshot the Capitals 26-12 during the last two periods, but it was Vokoun who came up big for Washington.

There was just four total power plays in the game. Ottawa was 0-for-1 while Washington was 1-for-3.
