Selanne scores twice as Ducks edge Sharks

Oct 18, 2011 - 7:26 AM San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Teemu Selanne scored twice as the Anaheim Ducks held on for a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks at HP Pavilion.

With the two goals, Selanne now has 639 in his career and sits one score behind Dave Andreychuk for 13th all-time.

Saku Koivu assisted on both of Selanne's goals and Corey Perry notched the game-winner in the Ducks' fourth straight victory.

Dan Ellis made 41 saves for the win.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Brent Burns scored for San Jose, who dropped its third consecutive game.

"We're moving the right way but we're not getting the results that we want," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said. "When the puck starts going in for us it will turn."

Antti Niemi made 19 saves in his first action of the season after having a cyst removed from his knee in training camp.

Andrew Desjardins' delay of game penalty led to the Ducks' first goal just under 10 minutes into the first period. Lubomir Visnovsky sent a pass from the half boards down to Koivu at the low-right corner. Koivu then wristed a hard pass across the ice to Selanne on the side of the net and he slapped the puck in for the power-play goal.

Selanne added his second goal of the period at the 14:33 mark when he collected a rebound from a shot by Koivu off the pads of Niemi in the front of the goal and stuffed it in for a 2-0 lead.

San Jose got on the board at the 6:39 mark of the second period when Vlasic sent a swiping backhand from the left circle at the net. Ellis made the easy save but the rebound went right into the slot and deflected off of Ducks forward Bobby Ryan's leg and back through Ellis' legs.

The Ducks got their two-goal cushion back in the third when Perry skated down the right side of the ice, cut across the top of the Sharks' zone, spun into a shooting position and wristed a shot into the top-right corner on the far side of the net just over four minutes into the period.

The Sharks took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to make it a one-goal game again when Burns' one-timer streaked into the twine with 9:59 left in the contest, but Ellis made several big saves as San Jose frantically tried to equalize the game to hold on for the win.

"The games are intense and there is no easy game in the NHL," Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said. "Tonight we were able to squeak by."

Anaheim has allowed just nine goals over its first five games of the season...The Ducks have won three straight and five of the last seven meetings with the Sharks...Anaheim went 1-for-3 on the power play while San Jose had one goal on six power-play opportunities.
