Roving Rangers make a stop in Edmonton

Oct 22, 2011 - 3:45 PM (Sports Network) - New York's extensive road trip to begin the 2011-12 season will continue this evening in Alberta, where the Rangers will take on the homestanding Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place.

The Rangers are playing their first seven games away from home due to renovations to Madison Square Garden and have registered back-to-back wins following a season-opening three-game slide. They stopped the bleeding with a win at Vancouver on Tuesday before handing Calgary a 3-2 setback in overtime Thursday thanks to Ryan McDonagh's goal just 1.8 seconds to go in the extra frame.

Marian Gaborik and Brandon Prust also had a goal for the Rangers, who will also visit Winnipeg before returning to the Big Apple for a six-game residency versus the Maple Leafs, Senators, Sharks, Ducks, Canadiens and Jets.

"It's nice to get the two points, but more importantly I thought we played that whole game well as a team," said New York head coach John Tortorella. "I think we were more consistent with our play tonight than we have been."

Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped 33 shots in the win. He was coming off a 40-save performance against the Canucks and has made 36 consecutive starts since his last night off on Feb. 11, 2011.

Edmonton opened a four-game homestand with Thursday's 2-1 loss versus Minnesota in a shootout. Ryan Jones scored the lone goal for Edmonton and goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin made 30 saves.

Khabibulin allowed a goal to Wild forward Dany Heatley with 1.2 seconds to go in regulation.

"You just can't lose hockey games that you're going into the final minutes winning," Jones said after the Oilers lost for the fourth time in five games. "We have to take responsibility for it as a group."

Oilers forward Taylor Hall was back in the lineup after missing Tuesday's game with the flu and center Sam Gagner (ankle) could be activated from injured reserve to take on the Rangers.

Edmonton will also host Vancouver and Washington on the residency. It has lost twice in a shootout this season.

New York crushed the Oilers, 8-2, in the last matchup between the teams on Nov. 14 at the Garden, as Gaborik scored his first three goals of the season and added an assist. Martin Biron filled in for a sick Lundqvist with 19 saves for the Rangers, who are 8-4-4 in the last 16 meetings in this series.

The Rangers are 7-3-2 in their last 12 trips to Edmonton.
