Jagr, Flyers double up Maple Leafs

Oct 25, 2011 - 4:47 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jaromir Jagr scored his first two goals with his new team and added an assist Monday as the Philadelphia Flyers took a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Signed as a free agent in the offseason, Jagr, who now has 648 career NHL goals, had just four assists through his first seven games with the Flyers.

"Truly, I needed it," said Jagr. "I feel a lot better right now than I have, that's for sure. I changed everything: the skate, gloves. I got hit in the head during warm-ups, so that helped."

However, Jagr's three-point night along with a two-goal, one-assist game from Scott Hartnell helped the Flyers snap a two-game losing streak. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24-of-26 shots in the win.

"We weren't happy with our last two games here at home," said Hartnell. "We started out bad and even though they got that first goal we didn't hang our heads. We went right after them. I think it was a great effort by everyone. It's nice to contribute. We did 60 minutes tonight to get it."

It wasn't all good news for the Flyers, though, as defenseman and team captain Chris Pronger left the game with 8:02 left in the first period when he was hit in the face by a high stick from Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski.

Pronger clutched his face and, hunched over, skated straight to the bench and went to the dressing room. The team said after the first period that he would not return to play and he was checked out by an eye doctor.

"Right now, he had a little bit of a cut just on the outside of his right eye here," said Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren. "The eye doctor checked him out thoroughly, and he's got a little bit of an issue right now with his eye. We think max, three or four days, no real concern, other than what might happen over the next three or four days, whether it's swelling or something behind the eye. So he's basically going to be on bed rest for three days, and hopefully he'll be fine within a couple weeks."

Phil Kessel and David Steckel both had a goal for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped three of their last five. Jonas Gustavsson made 26 saves in the loss.

"I was actually pleased with our efforts, I thought we had some real quality scoring chances but I am disappointed that we did not shoot the puck more when we had opportunities," said Toronto head coach Ron Wilson. "We hit a lot of sticks and the Flyers are really good in their zone with sticks, but we got some pucks to the net, but we didn't do it as well tonight."

Toronto scored 6:11 into the game after Joffrey Lupul's right point shot deflected off a Flyer and went to the right side, where Kessel wristed it home for his NHL-leading ninth goal of the season.

Jagr, though, tied the game 10 minutes later on the power play when he accepted a feed from Claude Giroux, flew behind the defense and beat Gustavsson to the blocker side.

The Flyers took a 2-1 lead with another power play goal. A wraparound pass from the left side by Danny Briere went to the right and Harntell followed up his own one-timer by jamming it in at the 15:46 mark for his first goal of the season.

Philly made it a 3-1 game 8:34 into the third as Giroux sent a backhand pass from the left boards to the front where Hartnell one-timed it home.

Toronto got one back with 8:26 to play when the puck went off of Steckel in front and trickled past Bobrovsky.

But Jagr sealed the win with his second breakaway goal of the game as he was sprung by Hartnell and finished with a shot to the same area as his first goal.

Game Notes

Brothers Luke Schenn of Toronto and Brayden Schenn of Philadelphia played their first regular season NHL game against each other. Luke was the fifth overall pick of the 2008 draft while Brayden was the fifth overall pick in 2009...Philly took three of four from Toronto last season...The Flyers went 2- for-5 on the power play while the Leafs were 0-for-3.
