Flames take down Avalanche in Calgary

Oct 27, 2011 - 5:27 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Lee Stempniak scored the second of three straight goals for Calgary, as the Flames snapped the Avalanche's six-game road winning streak with a 4-2 victory at the Saddledome.

Rene Bourque lit the lamp twice and Roman Horak netted his first career goal for Calgary, which improved to 2-1-1 on its six-game homestand.

Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 34 shots in the win, while Jean-Sebastien Giguere, in his third start of the season, gave up three goals on 34 shots.

A long rebound led to Ryan Wilson's goal with 4:31 remaining in regulation, which cut Colorado's deficit to 3-2.

But as Giguere sat for the extra attacker, Bourque had a clear path to an easy empty-netter and had his legs taken our from under him by an Avs defenseman. A penalty was called and Bourque was awarded an uncontested goal.

"It's tough to play catch-up in this league, no matter how well we played in the third period," Avs head coach Joe Sacco said.

Kyle Quincey scored the Avs' first goal at 10:50 of the opening period, knocking in a gimme after Paul Stastny hit the post on a wide open stuff-in.

Horak flicked in his memorable tally while he was falling to the ice with 6:12 remaining in the first.

Stempniak scored the go-ahead goal 3:57 into the second after Colorado failed to clear the defensive zone, and Bourque extended the lead 5 1/2 minutes later when he cleaned up a rebound at the right doorstep.

"We wanted to make sure we threw pucks at the net as much as we could and had one guy going to the net," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said.
