Habs, Bruins close out home-and-home set in Montreal

Oct 29, 2011 - 2:12 PM (Sports Network) - A pair of Original Six clubs will close out a home-and-home series tonight north of the border, as the Montreal Canadiens host the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins at Bell Centre.

The Bruins remained last in the Northeast Division with Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Habs in a rematch of last year's first-round playoff series that was pushed to the brink. Patrice Bergeron was the lone goal scorer for the Bruins and Tim Thomas made 33 saves between the pipes.

"We were in the game, one-goal game the whole time," Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara said. "A lot of chances, they didn't go in and they scored. Obviously we tried to tie the game, but that's the way it is."

Boston has dropped two straight games and fell to just 3-6-0 on the season. It will play its third road game of the season tonight and split the first two. The Bruins have three games scheduled in the next seven days, all three of which are against division inhabitants.

Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid returned to the lineup on Thursday after he missed the previous four games with a head/neck injury.

Meanwhile, Montreal has recorded two straight wins since a six-game losing streak and Tomas Plekanec redeemed himself with an usual play for the go-ahead goal midway through the third period. Plekanec won a faceoff earlier in the game that went into his own net behind goaltender Carey Price, who turned away 29-of-30 shots in the win.

Price had been 0-2-0 with a 7.47 goals-against average in his past two regular-season visits to TD Garden. Erik Cole scored the other goal for the Canadiens, who will play two straight and four of five games on the road after Saturday's game.

"We got off to a slow start tonight but we worked our way back into the game. It's another big two points but at the same time wins don't matter unless you continue winning," Cole told the Habs' site. "We're just going to have to enjoy it tonight, get some rest [Friday] and get ready for a big game on Saturday."

The Canadiens went 4-2 against the Bruins a season ago, including a 3-0 record at Bell Centre. Montreal has won 10 of the past 13 matchups with Boston, which has lost four straight, five of six and 17 of its last 21 visits to Quebec.
