Boston snaps Ottawa's 6-game winning streak
Nov 2, 2011 - 3:54 AM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Johnny Boychuk and Daniel Paille scored 37 seconds apart in the third period, and Boston snapped Ottawa's six-game winning streak with a 5-3 victory on Tuesday night.Milan Lucic, Patrice Bergeron and former Senator Chris Kelly also scored for the Bruins, who snapped a three-game losing streak and bounced back nicely from a home-and-home sweep by Montreal last week.
Tim Thomas had 23 saves in the win.
"We just have to keep working hard and we'll put together wins," said Paille. "It was a good game tonight and everyone contributed. Defensively we did pretty good and the offense was able to provide some big goals when we needed them."
Nick Foligno, Stephane Da Costa and Jared Cowen had goals in Ottawa's first loss since October 18. Craig Anderson was peppered with 41 shots and allowed all five Boston goals.
The Senators matched expectations with a tepid 1-5-0 start before rattling off wins against the Jets, Blue Jackets, Hurricanes, Panthers, Rangers and Maple Leafs.
They gave up two early leads against the Bruins, but tied the game 5:04 into the third period on Cowen's first NHL goal, a wrist shot from above the left circle that was screened twice before bouncing in to make it 3-3.
But Boychuk and Paille scored in a 37-second span to give the Bruins their 5-3 lead.
Boychuk's goal came after the Senators won a faceoff and the puck trickled behind their net and back around front. It ended up on Boychuk's stick above the right circle for a slap that shot made it through for the lead.
Paille's breakaway goal, at 7:18, was set up by Shawn Thornton's chip pass into the neutral zone. Paille got behind two defenders and beat Anderson through the legs for the two-goal cushion.
Earlier, there were three goals and seven penalties in the first 7:40 of the game.
Ottawa took a 1-0 lead on Foligno's goal at the 5:19 mark -- his shot was blocked aside by Thomas, but knocked in -- and Boston tied it on a power play at 7:12 when Lucic roofed a backhand over Anderson from beside the net.
But the Senators went back ahead just 16 seconds after that, taking a 2-1 lead when a long shot hit a Boston defender and ended up with Foligno, who sent a backwards pass between his legs to Da Costa for the assist.
Bergeron tied the game for Boston with a snap shot from the slot at 4:21 of the second period, set up by a nice pass from Tyler Seguin.
Later, Kelly gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead with two minutes remaining in the period, firing a slap shot from the point through several Ottawa defenders that beat Anderson high to the glove side.
Boston acquired Kelly in a trade with the Senators in February.
