Red Wings try to snap slide in clash with Flames
Nov 3, 2011 - 3:19 PM (Sports Network) - The struggling Detroit Red Wings look to avoid their sixth consecutive loss when they resume a six-game homestand tonight versus the Calgary Flames at Joe Louis Arena.Detroit has lost five straight games and hasn't suffered six defeats in a row since the 2007-08 season. It dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime versus Minnesota on Tuesday and received a goal from future Hall of Fame defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. Lidstrom has a goal and three assists over his last five games.
Jimmy Howard had 25 saves in the crease for Detroit, which hadn't lost five straight games since January of 2009 and was swept in the home-and-home set with the Wild.
"We're working hard, but we're not getting the results," Howard said after the game. "We got a point tonight and that's good, but we have to get things back on track here."
The Red Wings will also host the Ducks, Avalanche, Oilers and Stars on this current residency, and are averaging just one goal per game during their losing streak.
Calgary will hit the road for three straight games against Detroit, Buffalo and Colorado, and had a modest two-game winning streak cut short in a 5-1 loss versus Vancouver on Tuesday.
Miikka Kiprusoff yielded all five goals, including three in the opening stanza, on 18 shots and was pulled after two periods. Henrik Karlsson stopped all three shots he faced in the third for the Flames, who broke the shutout on Alex Tanguay's goal with 31.6 seconds remaining in the contest.
"I thought we started the game fine, but the game got away from us after the first 10 minutes," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said.
Tanguay needs five more points for 700 in his career and Kiprusoff is 10 games shy of 500 with the Flames. Tanguay has a point in seven of his first 10 games this season.
Detroit swept the four-game series last season with Calgary and has won five straight overall. The Flames have lost 12 of 17 encounters with the Red Wings at the Joe and star forward Jarome Iginla led the team in scoring against Detroit last season with six points (3g, 3a).
