Final - 2OT
Devils top Flyers in shootout
Nov 4, 2011 - 3:09 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Patrik Elias scored in the final round of the shootout as the New Jersey Devils took a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center. With the final attempt of the shootout, Elias skated in on net and deked to the backhand before slipping it under the outstretched left pad of Sergei Bobrovsky for the win.
Adam Henrique scored the first goal of his career while Zach Parise and David Clarkson each lit the lamp for the Devils, who snapped a three-game slide. Johan Hedberg made 20 saves and stopped two of the three shootout attempts.
"I think that obviously it was an important game for us and we knew that," said Devils head coach Peter DeBoer. "We stuck with it and got rewarded for it. It's nice to get rewarded for an effort like that."
Zac Rinaldo tallied his first NHL goal while Claude Giroux and Maxime Talbot also scored for the Flyers, who had a two-game winning streak stopped. Bobrovsky made 36 saves, but stopped just one of three shootout chances.
"Well it's unfortunate because we fell that we should have won that game," said Talbot. "Twice in this game we had the lead and we lost it. Especially in the second period we were kind of sloppy. We will just have to look at tapes and pay attention to detail more and come back on Saturday."
After a scoreless first period, the Flyers grabbed the lead at the 2:28 mark of the second when Sean Couturier sent a pass from behind the right side of the net to the inside right circle where Rinaldo slid over a bit and snapped a wrister into the net.
It was 2-0 at the 8:08 mark of the second, when Jaromir Jagr skated into the zone down the left wing, circled behind the net and from the right circle threw it over to the left where Giroux wristed it home for his eighth goal of the season.
The Devils, though, got one back just 51 seconds later off a broken play that saw Parise backhand the puck in from near the left circle.
New Jersey then tied the game three minutes later off a turnover in the Flyers end that saw Ilya Kovalchuk send a saucer pass from the right circle to the left where Henrique wristed home the puck.
Just 2:37 into the third, Talbot was hauled down by Mark Fayne on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Talbot went wide to the right then skated to the center before beating Hedberg with a wrister.
The Devils, though, again tied the game off a bad turnover. Matt Carle had the puck in his zone and attempted to get it out through the middle, but Elias picked it off. Elias then slid a pass down to Clarkson, who beat Bobrovsky with a shot to tie the game with 6:35 to play.
