Canucks hang on to down Kings
Nov 11, 2011 - 6:56 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Aaron Rome capped a three-goal first period outburst by Vancouver and his tally proved to be the difference, as the Canucks held on to beat the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2, at Staples Center.Sami Salo and Andrew Ebbett scored power-play goals 42 seconds apart for Vancouver, which improved to 3-2-0 on a six-game road trip that ends in Anaheim on Friday.
Roberto Luongo made 28 saves to earn the win.
Drew Doughty and Mike Richards found the back of the net for the Kings, who snapped an 0-3-2 skid with Tuesday's win over Nashville.
Jonathan Quick stopped 29-of-32 shots in defeat.
The Kings closed to within a goal late in the third period. With Quick on the bench for an extra skater, Anze Kopitar let go a slap shot from near the blue line that Richards redirected past Luongo with 1:10 remaining.
But it wasn't enough for Los Angeles, which fell behind early after consecutive penalties. Kings forward Trevor Lewis was given a five-minute major for elbowing 3:03 into the contest. Already down a man, Doughty cross- checked Canucks forward Ryan Kesler.
Vancouver capitalized on the 5-on-3 when Salo beat Quick to the far side with a blast from atop the right circle. Still on the power play, Ebbett fired a shot that deflected in off the skate of Los Angeles defenseman Willie Mitchell at 7:33.
"The way the game unfolded with us getting an early five-minute power play and then following it up with an undisciplined penalty on Ryan Kesler, we were able to make them pay," said Vancouver head coach Alain Vigneault.
Rome lit the lamp with 4:18 left in the opening stanza.
"It's very hard to dig out of a hole like that against that kind of a team," said Los Angeles head coach Terry Murray.
Doughty netted a power-play goal to put the Kings on the board at 10:30 of the second period.
