Caps host Devils in home-and-home finale

Nov 12, 2011 - 4:11 PM (Sports Network) - The New Jersey Devils will try to salvage the finale of a home-and-home series when they visit the Washington Capitals for tonight's clash at the Verizon Center.

The Capitals took the opener of this set Friday in Newark, as Jason Chimera and Marcus Johansson both scored third-period goals to lift Washington to a 3-1 decision at Prudential Center.

The victory ended a two-game slide for the Capitals and was the club's third win in five outings. Washington is 3-4-0 since starting the season with seven consecutive victories.

New Jersey, meanwhile, will try to get back on track tonight after having a three-game winning streak snapped on Friday.

Washington has taken three straight and five of the last six meetings in this series overall. The Devils have lost three in a row, four of five and seven of their last eight in D.C.

Alex Ovechkin also netted his seventh goal of the season for Washington in Friday's win. The Russian superstar has 10 goals and 29 points in 23 career games against the Devils.

Tomas Vokoun made half of his 32 saves during the final 20 minutes for the Capitals.

"Tomas made some big saves for us all night when we needed them and definitely kept us in there," Capitals forward Matt Hendricks said of his goaltender's effort.

Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau is expected to go with Michal Neuvirth in net this evening rather than have the 35-year-old Vokoun start on back-to-back nights. Neuvirth is 4-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average in four career starts against New Jersey.

New Jersey's Martin Brodeur yielded three goals on 17 shots in Friday's loss. Johan Hedberg is expected to be in net tonight for the Devils.

New Jersey has played the last three games without winger Ilya Kovalchuk and the club will be without the Russian sniper again tonight. Kovalchuk, who has two goals and seven assists this season, is battling a groin injury.

Washington's Mike Green played Friday after missing the previous six games with an injured right ankle. Green logged just seven minutes, 44 seconds of ice time and was a minus-one in his first game since Oct. 22.

The Devils, who are kicking off a five-game road trip today, are 3-3-0 as the visiting team this season. Washington is 6-1-0 on home ice after having its perfect record in D.C. snapped in a 5-2 loss to Dallas on Tuesday.
