Jets top slumping Capitals

Nov 18, 2011 - 5:33 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Evander Kane scored two goals, Ondrej Pavelec made 31 saves and the Winnipeg Jets posted a 4-1 victory over the Washington Capitals at the MTS Centre.

Blake Wheeler and Kyle Wellwood added power-play goals for Winnipeg, which ended a five-game losing streak (0-3-2) with a 5-2 victory over visiting Tampa Bay on Monday.

"We had a lot of heart and a lot of passion and we played really strong," said Jets head coach Claude Noel.

Michal Neuvirth yielded four goals on 31 shots for the Capitals, who fell to 3-6-1 since opening the season with seven consecutive wins.

"I thought the first five minutes was okay, but then we started giving them (chances). Every chance they got, we gave them," said Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau.

Alexander Semin gave Washington an early 1-0 lead, but the Capitals allowed four unanswered goals.

The first two came off the stick of Kane, who tied the game at the 7:51 mark of the first period -- four minutes after Semin's tally. He struck again at 6:38 of the second, collecting Wellwood's pass from the right corner and beating Neuvirth high on the short side.

Wheeler netted his first goal of the season at 8:31, then Wellwood scored from in close at 10:54.

Pavelec turned away seven shots over the final 20 minutes.

Game Notes

The Capitals played in Winnipeg for the first time since December 10, 1995...Boudreau is still one win shy of 200 in his NHL coaching career...Winnipeg defenseman Johnny Oduya appeared in his 400th career game.
