Surging Red Wings square off with Predators
Nov 26, 2011 - 3:46 PM (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings ended the league's longest active winning streak on Friday afternoon, so their troubles against the Nashville Predators from a season ago aren't likely to influence the streaking club tonight. The Red Wings square off against the Predators for the first time this season at Joe Louis Arena looking for a season high-tying fifth straight victory.
Streaky Detroit has won eight of its last 10 games since a six-game slide from Oct. 22-Nov. 5. That skid came right after a 5-0 start to the season.
The Red Wings have scored at least four goals in six of their last eight wins, but won a tight contest in Boston on Friday. Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi scored in the shootout and Jimmy Howard made 41 saves in a 3-2 victory, snapping the Bruins' 10-game win streak.
Howard made 17 saves in the third period and stopped two of three in the shootout.
"It was a lot of fun out there," Howard said. "Our guys did a great job. We battled hard all night long, a gutsy road win. Under the circumstances, with it being Thanksgiving yesterday, I think we did a great job out there today."
Detroit, which brings a five-game home winning streak into this tilt, got regulation goals from Datsyuk and Valtteri Filppula. Datsyuk has four goals and four assists in his past four games.
Nashville tries to avoid a fourth loss in a row this evening and had success versus the Red Wings last year. The Preds went 4-1-1 in the season series and have won three of their last four trips to Detroit.
The Predators, though, are on their longest losing streak since a season-worst four-game skid from Oct. 13-20 after dropping a third straight contest on Wednesday with a 3-2 defeat in Minnesota.
Pekka Rinne made 27 saves, but gave up a short-handed goal to the Wild's Cal Clutterbuck at 13:19 in the third. Rinne came out to play the disc, but fell down to give the Wild forward an open net. Nashville made it a one-goal game just 38 seconds later when Ryan Suter scored during a 5-one-3 power play, magnifying Rinne's mistake.
"I just came out to play the puck and it kind of stopped, and I changed my mind and fell down," Rinne, who made 27 saves, said. "I lost the game for us."
Jordin Tootoo assisted on Suter's goal and scored one of his own for the Preds, who lost the opener of a five-game road trip.
