Sabres rip slumping Capitals

Nov 27, 2011 - 4:27 AM Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Luke Adam scored twice as the Buffalo Sabres downed the Washington Capitals, 5-1, at First Niagara Center.

Jochen Hecht, Jason Pominville and Zack Kassian each scored for the Sabres, who snapped a three-game slide. Jhonas Enroth stopped 26 shots in the win.

"I thought everyone participated on the offense tonight," said Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff. "All five guys on the ice participated and it was a good game, overall."

Jason Chimera scored the lone goal for the Capitals, who have dropped their past two. Tomas Vokoun was tagged for all five goals on 28 shots.

"We need to support each other better and not get down on ourselves," said Washington forward Alex Ovechkin. "We will snap out of this slump, but to do that we have to play better as a team."

Buffalo scored just past the midway mark of the first period as good forecheking in the deep left boards saw the puck worked to the front with Adam one-timing it home.

It was 2-0 with 4:37 to play in the first when Thomas Vanek blasted a shot from the right point that was going high, but Vokoun got a glove on it and tipped it over to the left where Pominville slammed it home.

Chimera was awarded a penalty shot at the 6:39 mark of the second when he was tripped by Christian Ehrhoff on a breakaway and made the most of the free shot as he snapped it past the blocker of Enroth.

Just 27 seconds later, though, Kassian's first career goal in his second game gave Buffalo a two-goal edge as his wrister on the fly from the right circle trickled past Vokoun.

Adam's second goal of the game came 1:12 into the third as his snap shot from the right circle got past Vokoun after good work in the deep boards got the puck loose.

Hecht's short-handed goal with 5:21 to play accounted for the final score.
