Colorado routs New Jersey

Dec 1, 2011 - 5:24 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Ryan O'Reilly had a goal and two assists to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 6-1 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Milan Hejduk scored a goal and added an assist while T.J. Galiardi, Jay McClement, Stefan Elliott and Jan Hejda each scored for the Avalanche, who had lost six of eight coming into the game. Semyon Varlamov stopped 18 shots in the win.

"The first period was the way we wanted to come out tonight," said Hejduk. "We got the start we wanted that we have not had for quite a while. It was a great team effort. Now we have to put a run together."

Ilya Kovalchuk scored the lone goal for the Devils, who have dropped two straight. Martin Brodeur gave up all six goals on 25 shots.

The first goal came 7:37 into the game when O'Reilly caught up to a loose puck in the inside right circle and sent it over to the left where Hejduk one-timed it home.

At the 14:14 mark, it was a 2-0 game when Galiardi stole the puck off a defender behind the net and sent a quick backhander in past Brodeur.

Less than two minutes later, Hejda's blast from the high slot made it a 3-0 game.

"It was a pretty bad, I don't know what else to say," said New Jersey left winger Zach Parise. "The first period we just could not get out of our zone and the next thing we know, we're down 3-0."

Kovalchuk jammed the puck into the net off an Adam Henrique feed in front at the 11:03 mark of the second for the only goal of the period.

That was as close as it got, though, as O'Reilly scored 2:47 into the third when his turnaround shot from the low-right side popped over Brodeur.

McClement and Elliott scored at the 10:32 and 17:17 mark, respectively, to turn the game into a rout.
