Weber's late scores send Preds past Red Wings
Dec 16, 2011 - 5:40 AM Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Shea Weber scored the tying and go-ahead goals late in the third period, lifting the Nashville Predators to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.Jordin Tootoo added a goal and an assist and David Legwand also scored for the Predators, who extended their season-long win streak to four games thanks to Weber's blue-line wrister with 1:36 remaining.
Pekka Rinne stopped 37 shots in the victory.
"In big moments you need your top players to step up and Shea stepped up in a huge way today," said Predators coach Barry Trotz.
Tomas Holmstrom, Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lindstrom each had a goal, while Jimmy Howard made 17 saves for the Red Wings, who saw their three-game win streak come to an end.
The Predators, who have scored at least one power-play goal in seven straight games, capitalized with the man advantage late in the third to pull even.
With 4:24 remaining, Weber ripped a slap shot from the left circle. Screened by Patric Hornqvist, Howard allowed the puck to enter his net on the glove side, making it a 3-3 game.
The winner came minutes later, when Weber's wrister short-hopped the goaltender and bounced into the net over his left shoulder.
"It was kind of a lucky bounce for them," Lindstrom said of the game-winner. "But they were going to the net and creating the traffic there."
Early on, back-and-forth action fittingly led to a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes of play.
Holmstrom gave Detroit a 1-0 lead with a power-play tally at the 5:15 mark, burying a backhand off an Ian White deflection.
Legwand made it a 1-1 game with a wrister midway through the period, but the Red Wings grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second with a pair of quick goals.
Zetterberg struck first, beating Rinne with a wrister for a power-play goal at the 10:03 mark. Just 1:27 later, Lidstrom buried a slap shot for the two-goal advantage.
With 2:38 left in the second, Tootoo buried a wide-open wrister off a feed from Kevin Klein to make it 3-2 and set up the third-period comeback.
"That was a huge lift," Predators forward Nick Spaling said of the goal. "Things really picked off on the bench after that."
