Canucks take down Maple Leafs
Dec 18, 2011 - 4:31 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Chris Higgins and Alexandre Burrows each recorded a goal and an assist as the Vancouver Canucks ended their five-game road trip with a 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-3.Mason Raymond, Daniel Sedin and Jannik Hansen also tallied for the Canucks, who have won five of their past seven games. Roberto Luongo made 26 saves for the win.
"We played good against them, but they stayed in the game and we were lucky to put it away later," Sedin said.
Tyler Bozak had a goal and two assists, while Joffrey Lupul and Phil Kessel also scored for Toronto, which got 31 saves from Jonas Gustavsson.
"We just have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot, too many giveaways tonight," Toronto head coach Ron Wilson said.
With the game tied at two, Sedin scored the go-ahead tally with 44 seconds left in the second period. Burrows skated up the center of the ice on a 3-on-2 break. He fed Sedin located to his left, and he tipped it home.
Burrows gave the Canucks a two-goal advantage as his wrister from the high slot ripped the back of the net with 5:54 to go in the third period.
Kessel then made it 4-3 with 2:43 remaining. From the right boards, Bozak fed Kessel in the slot and he snapped it by Luongo.
But Hansen's tally sealed the win for the Canucks with 1:40 left.
Higgins put the Canucks on the board first as his backhand from the slot beat Gustavsson 1:02 in.
The Leafs tied it 2:56 later on the power play. Bozak put a shot on net from the right circle, and Lupul put home the rebound.
Raymond pounced on a loose puck in the crease and snapped it past Gustavsson for a 2-1 lead 49 seconds into the second period.
The Leafs tied it again at the 7:33 mark of the second. Kessel flipped a pass from center ice to Bozak, who was located in the slot. Bozak controlled the rolling disk and backhanded it into the back of the net.
Game Notes
Kessel tied Philadelphia's Claude Giroux for the NHL lead in points with 39...Vancouver heads home to take on the Wild on Monday, while the Maple Leafs stay in Toronto to play the Kings on Monday...The Canucks went 3-1-1 on the road trip.
