Bruins stay hot, clip Canadiens
Dec 20, 2011 - 2:55 AM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Brad Marchand's third-period goal proved to be the difference, as the Boston Bruins held on to beat the Montreal Canadiens, 3-2, at TD Garden.Benoit Pouliot and David Krejci also scored for the Bruins, who got 33 saves from Tim Thomas.
Boston has won its last five games and 19 of 22 overall.
Tomas Plekanec and Erik Cole lit the lamp for Montreal, which lost its second straight game under interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth.
Carey Price stopped 28 shots in defeat.
To start the sequence which led to the deciding tally, Patrice Bergeron forced a turnover at the Montreal blue line. Tyler Seguin collected the puck and dished to Marchand, who avoided Price's poke check and scored on a backhand to put Boston up 3-1 with 5:46 remaining.
Montreal closed to within a goal when David Desharnais' shot deflected in off the skate of Cole as he crashed the crease with 1:14 to play, but could not find an equalizer.
The hosts started off well. Rich Peverley won a right-circle faceoff forward and quickly fed Pouliot on the doorstep for a one-timer at the 12:13 mark of the first period. The Canadiens responded 1:13 later as Plekanec converted a pass from Michael Cammalleri.
The Bruins regained the lead less than three minutes into the second period, when an Andrew Ference centering attempt from behind the Montreal net caromed in off Krejci's left skate.
