Final - 2OT
Kings top Maple Leafs in SO
Dec 20, 2011 - 6:07 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Dustin Brown scored the only goal of the shootout to give the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. On the final attempt of the shootout, Brown ripped a shot past James Reimer and off the post into the net.
Justin Williams and Brown scored in regulation for the Kings, who are 2-2-0 under interim head coach John Stevens. Jonathan Quick made 31 stops.
"We have a bunch of guys on this team that can lead," said Brown. "We have guys who have been around this league for a while and know how to get things done."
However, it is probably the final game for the team under Stevens as Darryl Sutter will likely be introduced as the new head coach on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Sutter agreed to become the next head coach of the team on Saturday, but is still working on immigration issues. Stevens has been guiding the club on an interim basis after the team fired Terry Murray last week.
Los Angeles' next game is on Thursday at home against Anaheim.
John-Michael Liles and Matt Frattin each scored for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped three straight. Reimer stopped 40 shots.
"I feel like I've been playing well," said Reimer. "Some strange bounces tonight but I was seeing the puck well, wasn't battling it too much out there."
The first goal of the game went to LA as a dump in by Drew Doughty saw the puck take a bounce off the back boards and come back out front where Williams snapped it past a surprised Reimer 7:54 into the first.
Toronto got it back just over three minutes later as Tyler Bozak picked off an attempted clear at the right boards and fired a hard pass that went off the left boards back to the circle where Liles one-timed it home.
The only goal of the second period went to the Kings as they scored on the power play. Anze Kopitar fired a pass from the right circle to the deep boards where Simon Gagne fired it out front and Brown one-timed it home with just over five minutes to play in the second.
However, the Maple Leafs tied the game three minutes into the third when Toronto gained the zone on the rush and Mikhail Grabovski sent a saucer pass over to the low right side and Frattin got his stick on it for the redirection.
