Lundqvist, Rangers shut down Flyers

Dec 24, 2011 - 5:03 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 28 shots as the New York Rangers downed the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-2, at Madison Square Garden.

Marian Gaborik, Derek Stepan, Ryan Callahan and Ruslan Fedotenko all scored for the Rangers, who have won four straight. Michael Del Zotto and Stu Bickel each had two assists.

"It had that playoff-type atmosphere 30-something games into the season," said Callahan. "You don't see that too much. The crowd was into it, bodies were getting thrown around. We love playing these types of games."

Andrej Meszaros and James van Riemsdyk each had a goal for the Flyers, who have dropped their past three games in Madison Square Garden. Ilya Bryzgalov was tagged for all four goals on 24 shots in the loss.

"We played a pretty good first period, but they jumped on us in the second and they made it tough to mount a comeback," said Meszaros.

The game was a preview of the 2012 Winter Classic, which will pit these two teams against each other out in the cold on January 2 at Citizens Bank Park, home of baseball's Philadelphia Phillies.

After a scoreless first period, the Rangers got on the board halfway though the second when a right point shot from Bickel was redirected in by Stepan at the right side.

Just over five minutes later, New York scored in similar fashion as Bickel's right point shot was deflected in by Fedotenko. The goal was reviewed to see if Fedotenko knocked it in with a high stick, but it was allowed to stand.

At the 1:48 mark of the third, Gaborik was sprung on a breakaway and buried his chance for his league-leading 21st goal of the season.

On the power play, the Flyers got on the board at the 10:21 mark when Meszaros' one-timer in the high slot made its way through a screen, but Callahan scored off a rebound less than four minutes later on the power play.

Van Riemsdyk's ninth of the season came off a battle at the left side of the net with 2:10 to play, accounting for the final goal.
