Iginla draws closer to milestone, helps Flames nip Jackets in SO

Dec 28, 2011 - 4:08 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Jarome Iginla scored his 498th career goal in regulation and netted the only score of the shootout, lifting the Calgary Flames to a 2-1 victory over the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets.

Iginla's power-play marker three minutes into the third period tied the game, and moved him within two goals of becoming the 42nd player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal plateau.

He then scored in the first round of the shootout, while Miikka Kiprusoff held steady in net to secure Calgary's fourth consecutive victory. Kiprusoff made 27 saves in regulation.

"It just feels good to get the fourth win in a row, get a comeback in the third period in a tight game," Iginla said. "It was definitely a little bit of a sluggish start, but they played well, too. But we had a really strong third period from everybody to have that push to get it to a shootout."

Steve Mason stopped 25 shots, but the Blue Jackets could only muster a second- period tally from Derick Brassard and lost for the sixth consecutive time.

Brassard's marker came just seconds after a Columbus power play ran out. He collected the puck in the right circle and fired a wrister that got through traffic at 12:02.

However, Iginla evened the game 3:06 into the third. He was trying to control the puck in front of the crease and put a weak backhander on net, but Mason left enough space between his pads for the puck to get through.

"He was all alone there, had time to do what he needed to do, and somehow it found a way underneath me," Mason said.

Iginla's goal was his 14th of the season...Columbus had won the first two meetings of the season, including a shootout victory December 1...Calgary's four-game road trip continues Thursday in Uniondale, New York against the Islanders, then concludes Friday in Ottawa.
