Ovechkin stays hot as Caps down Flames

Jan 4, 2012 - 5:02 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Tomas Vokoun turned aside 18 shots and Alex Ovechkin continued his hot streak with a goal and an assist as the Washington Capitals took down the Calgary Flames, 3-1, at Verizon Center.

Dennis Wideman and Troy Brouwer both had goals for the Capitals, who have won four straight.

"We've been moving puck really well lately, especially on the power play," said Washington head coach Dale Hunter. "We're starting to get some things going here and we'll continue to improve."

Ovechkin had been held without a multi-point game for almost two months, but has two points in each of the last four games and has totaled seven goals and four assists over a seven-game point streak.

Curtis Glencross scored the lone goal for the Flames, who have dropped their past four games. Miikka Kiprusoff was tagged with all three goals on 21 shots.

"We had some chances but we just didn't take advantage of them," said Glencross. "Especially on the power play, we have to score on more of them if we want to win."

Just 1:11 in, the Capitals took the lead on the power play as Marcus Johansson sent a pass over to the left circle where Ovechkin one-timed it home.

It was a 2-0 game after another power-play goal when Ovechkin's snap shot from the left point was stopped, but Brouwer was in front to put home the rebound at the 8:49 mark of the second.

Calgary made it a 2-1 contest five minutes later when Jarome Iginla fired a pass from behind the net to the front where Glencross shifted to the left and slipped the puck in.

Wideman, though, got the goal back just over three minutes later as Nicklas Backstrom grabbed the loose puck behind the net after a Calgary player misplayed the puck and skated around the net to the right side. He then fired a pass to the right circle where Wideman one-timed it home.

Vokoun stopped seven shots in the third period to help the Caps win their fourth straight at home.
