Bruins hope to get offense going versus Devils

Jan 4, 2012 - 4:10 PM (Sports Network) - The Boston Bruins will try to rebound from a rare loss when they visit the New Jersey Devils for this evening's game at the Prudential Center.

The Northeast Division-leading Bruins, who are 21-3-1 over their last 25 games, had a seven-game winning streak halted Saturday in Dallas. Trevor Daley had a goal and two assists to lift the Stars to a 4-2 win over the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Milan Lucic and Tyler Seguin scored for the Bruins, while Tim Thomas was tagged for all four goals on 27 shots in the loss. The setback dropped Thomas to 16-6-0 on the season.

Boston fired just 20 shots on goal in Saturday's loss and Bruins head coach Claude Julien is concerned about his team's lack of scoring chances since the Christmas break. The B's scored 22 times in their last four games before Christmas, but have two goals in each of their two tests following the break.

"Scoring chances have gone down a little bit lately, so we have to touch that up a little bit," Julien told his club's official web site. "The battle thing is something you want to get back in your game. And we've had a lot of time off since Christmas, so it's about recreating those good habits and battling a little bit."

Boston is still leading the NHL with 3.43 goals per game. The Bruins are also ranked first in defense, surrendering an average of 1.91 goals per test.

The Bruins are closing out a three-game road trip tonight and have a strong 11-4-0 record as the guest this season. Their next four games will be on home ice against Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Montreal.

The Devils had a two-game win streak halted in their last game on Monday, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision in Ottawa. Daniel Alfredsson scored with 59.4 seconds left in OT to give the Senators the extra point.

In the extra session, with Ottawa on the power play thanks to a penalty by David Clarkson, Alfredsson received a pass at the left circle and held it for a moment before ripping a wrister past Martin Brodeur for the win.

Clarkson and Dainius Zubrus each scored for the Devils, while Brodeur made 29 stops in defeat.

"We had our chances in this game, just couldn't take advantage," said Brodeur. "If you look at the game, it was pretty even through the whole thing."

Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov missed Monday's game with a lower body injury and is questionable for tonight.

New Jersey is 10-6-1 as the host this year and is playing the first of two straight on home ice. The Devils will also host Florida on Friday.

Boston recorded a 4-3 regulation win over the visiting Devils on Nov. 15, giving the Bruins wins in five of the last six encounters between the clubs. Jersey has taken three of its previous five home meetings in this series.
