Van Riemsdyk nets a pair as Flyers edge Blackhawks

Jan 6, 2012 - 4:08 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The last time the Blackhawks were in Philadelphia, they left the Wells Fargo Center with Lord Stanley's Cup.

Although the stakes were not nearly as significant, the Flyers got a measure of redemption with a 5-4 victory over Chicago Thursday night.

James van Riemsdyk eclipsed his production from last month with two goals, including the game-winner with 32.8 seconds to play in the third period.

Patrick Kane, whose goal from an unlikely angle in overtime of Game 6 on June 9, 2010 ended Chicago's 49-year championship drought, went off for high- sticking with 1:38 remaining.

A little over a minute later, van Riemsdyk, who had just one goal in 11 December games, hammered home a feed from Scott Hartnell.

"It's exciting to contribute," van Riemsdyk said. "Some bounces haven't necessarily gone my way most of the year, but it feels good to contribute and help the team win."

Hartnell, Jakub Voracek and Harry Zolnierczyk also scored for the Flyers, who returned indoors following Monday's loss to the Rangers in the Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park.

Ilya Bryzgalov made 30 saves in the win, his first since December 13.

Brent Seabrook and Kane tallied 25 seconds apart to erase a 4-2 deficit in the third.

Just as a double-minor penalty assessed to Chicago's Patrick Sharp for high- sticking ended, Seabrook lit the lamp with a wrister from the right circle. Jonathan Toews then created a turnover behind the Philadelphia net and Sharp dished to an uncovered Kane, who didn't miss from the slot at 14:40.

But the Blackhawks wound up losing in the City of Brotherly Love for the ninth straight time (during the regular season).

"Frustrating that we didn't get it into overtime," said Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville.

Chicago goalie Ray Emery posted 41 saves against his former team.

The clubs traded goals in the first period.

Chicago capitalized on a failed clearing attempt by Philadelphia pugilist Zac Rinaldo. Jamal Mayers kept the puck in at the blue line and dished to Jimmy Hayes skating toward the net, and the young winger redirected the feed past a pokechecking Bryzgalov at the 3:01 mark.

Later, the offbeat netminder made a pad save to deny Sharp on a 2-on-1 rush, allowing Philadelphia to tie the game when Voracek buried a carom of a Braydon Coburn point shot that hit off the end boards with 51 seconds remaining.

The Blackhawks moved back ahead on Andrew Shaw's first career goal, but the Flyers struck three times in 4:20 to grab a 4-2 lead in the second period.

Making his NHL debut, Shaw came out of the far corner, deked Philadelphia defenseman Kimmo Timonen and beat a stickless Bryzgalov with a backhander at 7:37.

Hartnell replied 17 seconds later for the Flyers, knocking a deflected Claude Giroux pass out of mid-air into the net. Zolnierczyk and van Riemsdyk then scored 23 seconds apart, with the latter converting a juicy rebound at 12:14.
